The placement, on the CCD, of spectra from different parts of the field-of-view (taken from the website of Jeremy Allington-Smith, Durham University):
Simplified Integral Field Unit's (IFU) operation based upon a 3X3 fiber optics array. In the diagram, the light from the image of the galaxy is transported through optical fibers to a spectrograph (indicated by prism).
